There are around 190 inhabited islands in the Maldives and most of them now have at least one guesthouse. Only a dozen or so are set up for tourists, and they are very different from each other: one is a busy budget hub with 100 guesthouses, another has a few hundred residents and a reef full of whale sharks. This guide, written from Malé, compares the eight local islands that make sense for a first visit — how to get there, what they cost, and who each one suits.

Prices are typical 2026 guesthouse rates in high season (December–March); expect 25–40% less in May–October. Add the Green Tax of USD 6 per person per night at guesthouses. Flights to Malé: compare on book.toptravelsky.com.
Maafushi — the easy choice
Maafushi is where local-island tourism started and it is still the busiest: 100+ guesthouses, dozens of restaurants, dive centres, water sports and a boat to somewhere every hour. The bikini beach is small and crowded in season, and it does not feel like a sleepy village any more. But nowhere else is as easy: the airport transfer is short and cheap, every excursion (sandbank, resort day pass, snorkelling with turtles and nurse sharks) is bookable on the street, and there is always a bed available. Pick Maafushi if it is your first Maldives trip, you are on a tight budget, or you want to do a lot in a few days.

Gulhi — Maafushi without the crowd
The Maafushi speedboat and ferry stop at Gulhi on the way. It is a fraction of the size, with a handful of guesthouses, a pretty bikini beach and a proper village feel. Excursion choice is smaller, but Maafushi is 10 minutes away by local boat if you want more. Good for couples who want quiet but not isolation.

Thulusdhoo — surf island
Home of the Cokes break (named after the Coca-Cola factory on the island) and a short boat ride from Chickens. Thulusdhoo has a younger, surfier crowd, good cafés and a decent bikini beach. Surf season is roughly April to October. If you do not surf, it is still a pleasant, well-connected base 30 minutes from the airport, but the beach is better on Dhiffushi.

Dhiffushi — beaches and families
A small island at the top of Kaafu with one of the best bikini beaches of any local island: long, shallow and sandy with a good house reef. It is calm, friendly and popular with families and older travellers. Fewer restaurants than Maafushi; most people eat at their guesthouse.

Rasdhoo — for divers
Rasdhoo sits on its own tiny atoll at the edge of Ari and has some of the best diving reachable from a guesthouse: hammerheads at dawn on the outer reef, mantas at Madivaru, and a house reef you can snorkel from the beach. The island itself is compact with a small bikini beach. Non-divers can snorkel, kayak and do sandbank trips, but if diving is not the point, Ukulhas is nicer to stay on.

Ukulhas — the well-run one
Ukulhas has won national awards for cleanliness and waste management and it shows: tidy streets, a long clean bikini beach, good guesthouses and an excellent house reef with turtles. Dive and snorkel trips to Ari atoll sites (including manta and whale shark areas in season) run daily. A strong all-round choice if you can stretch to the longer transfer.

Dhigurah — whale sharks
A long, thin island in South Ari with a 3 km beach and the only place in the Maldives where whale sharks are seen year-round along the outer reef. Snorkelling trips to find them run every morning (USD 40–60). It is the furthest of the popular islands by speedboat; many visitors fly to Maamigili (20 minutes, from about USD 80 each way) and take the 10-minute boat across. Worth it if whale sharks are your reason for coming.

Fulidhoo — small and special
Fulidhoo in Vaavu atoll has a few hundred residents and perhaps ten guesthouses. Every evening nurse sharks and stingrays gather at the harbour when the fishermen clean their catch, and you can snorkel with them. Vaavu has superb channel diving (Fotteyo, Miyaru Kandu). It is quiet in the real sense — go for the nature, not the nightlife, and book ahead because rooms are few.

Things that apply to every local island
- No alcohol. Local islands are dry. Guesthouses on most of them run “floating bars” — boats anchored offshore that serve drinks — or arrange resort day passes.
- Bikini beaches. Swimwear is only for the designated tourist beach; elsewhere cover shoulders and knees. Every island above has one.
- Fridays are quiet. Shops close for midday prayers and the public ferry does not run.
- Cash. Guesthouses take cards, but bring USD or rufiyaa for boats, cafés and excursions. ATMs exist on Maafushi and Thulusdhoo; not reliably elsewhere.
- Combining with a resort is popular: four or five nights on a local island, then two or three at a resort for the overwater villa. Most resorts sell day passes (USD 100–250 with lunch) from nearby local islands too.
Frequently asked questions
Which local island is best for a first visit?
Maafushi for ease and choice; Ukulhas or Dhiffushi if you want a quieter island with a better beach and do not mind a longer or slightly pricier transfer.
Can I visit two local islands in one trip?
Yes. Pairs that connect easily by local boat or shared speedboat: Maafushi–Gulhi, Rasdhoo–Ukulhas, Thulusdhoo–Dhiffushi. Crossing between atolls usually means going back via Malé.
Is it safe for solo female travellers?
Yes. Local islands are small, conservative communities with very low crime. Dress modestly outside the bikini beach and you will be treated with respect.
Do I need to book guesthouses in advance?
On Maafushi you can usually walk in. On the small islands (Fulidhoo, Gulhi, Dhigurah in whale-shark season) book ahead — there are only a few rooms, and immigration expects a confirmed booking anyway (see our entry requirements guide).
