Male Airport to Maafushi: Ferry vs Speedboat (2026 Prices, Times and Where to Board)

Maafushi is the most popular local island in the Maldives, and getting there from Velana International Airport (MLE) is cheap and simple once you know how it works. This guide covers every option — public ferry, shared speedboat and private speedboat — with 2026 prices, departure points and the mistakes that cost first-time visitors a night in Malé.

Option 1: Shared speedboat from the airport (the one most people take)

The shared speedboat is the only transfer that leaves directly from the airport. You do not need to go into Malé city at all. Walk out of arrivals, turn towards the water, and the boat operators are at the jetty on your left.

Live prices from Booking.com and other partners. Booking through our links supports this site at no extra cost to you.

  • Price: USD 20–30 per adult, roughly half for children. Pay in cash (USD or rufiyaa) or book online in advance.
  • Frequency: roughly every 1–2 hours from about 8:00 am until around 7:00 pm, with extra departures in peak season (December–March).
  • Journey time: 35–45 minutes depending on the sea. It can be bumpy between May and October — sit at the back if you get seasick.
  • Operators: iCom Tours and Maafushi Tours are the two main shared operators. Most Maafushi guesthouses will book one for you if you send your flight number — this is the easiest way to do it.

If your flight lands after about 6:30 pm, confirm the last departure with your guesthouse before you fly. Miss it and you will need a private boat or a night in Hulhumalé.

Option 2: MTCC public ferry (cheapest, but only once a day)

The government ferry run by MTCC costs about MVR 22 — under two dollars. The catch is the timetable: it leaves Malé city at 3:00 pm, once a day, and does not run on Fridays. The return from Maafushi is early morning, around 7:30 am. Journey time is about 1 hour 30 minutes, with a stop at Gulhi island on the way.

Because the ferry leaves from Malé city, not the airport, you first have to cross from the airport island:

  1. Airport to Malé: take the airport ferry (MVR 10–15, every 10–15 minutes, 10-minute crossing) or a taxi over the Sinamalé Bridge (around MVR 100–150, 15–20 minutes).
  2. Cross Malé to the ferry terminal: taxi MVR 30–40 or a 15–20 minute walk. Tell the driver “Maafushi ferry” — every taxi driver knows it. The Maafushi ferry has used the Villingili terminal on the south-west side of Malé; check with your guesthouse or at mtcc.mv for the current departure jetty, as terminals occasionally change.
  3. Buy your ticket at the counter about 30 minutes before departure. Cash only (rufiyaa).

Realistically the ferry only works if you land before about 1:00 pm on a day other than Friday. Later than that, take the speedboat — the saving is not worth a hotel night in Malé.

Option 3: Private speedboat

A private boat from the airport runs USD 150–250 for the whole boat (up to 8–10 people) and goes whenever you want, including late at night. For a family or a group of six or more it can work out cheaper per head than the shared boat, and it is the only option after the last shared departure. Your guesthouse can arrange it.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing “ferry” with “speedboat”. Many booking sites list the USD 20–30 speedboat as a “ferry”. The real public ferry is the MVR 22 MTCC boat. Different price, different jetty, different timetable.
  • Arriving on a Friday expecting the public ferry. Friday is the Maldivian weekend; the ferry does not run.
  • Not telling your guesthouse your flight number. They will meet you, book the boat and sort the rest. This is standard service, not an upsell.
  • Carrying only large USD notes. Boat operators and taxis often cannot change USD 100. Bring small notes or withdraw rufiyaa at the airport ATM (Bank of Maldives, in the arrivals hall).

Getting back to the airport

Shared speedboats run from Maafushi to the airport from early morning until evening — ask your guesthouse to book one that lands at least 3 hours before an international departure. Boats can be delayed by weather, and Velana airport check-in queues are long in peak season. The public ferry back leaves around 7:30 am and arrives in Malé city, so you then need a taxi or airport ferry to reach the terminal — allow 4 hours total.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Maafushi from Malé airport?

About 27 km south of Malé in Kaafu Atoll — 35–45 minutes by speedboat, about 90 minutes by public ferry.

Can I reach Maafushi the same day on a late flight?

Only by private speedboat if you land after the last shared boat (usually around 7 pm). Otherwise stay the night in Hulhumalé, which is 5 minutes from the airport and much cheaper than Malé city.

Is there a bridge or road to Maafushi?

No. Maafushi is a separate island; the only access is by boat. The Sinamalé Bridge connects the airport island to Malé and Hulhumalé only.

Do I pay in dollars or rufiyaa?

Speedboats take both. The public ferry and most taxis want rufiyaa. The exchange rate is fixed at roughly MVR 15.4 to USD 1.
