Maldives on a Budget 2026: Real Daily Costs on a Local Island (From USD 70 a Day)

You can do the Maldives for USD 70–100 a day per person if you stay on a local island, eat where Maldivians eat and take the public ferry. That is the real number, including the taxes that most guides forget. A resort holiday costs five to ten times that. This guide, written from Malé, breaks down what a budget trip actually costs in 2026: the room, the food, the boats, the excursions and the taxes, with a worked example for a typical day on Maafushi.

Figures are per person, two sharing, high season (December–March); room rates drop 25–40% from May to October. International flights are extra: compare fares to Malé on book.toptravelsky.com. The USD 100 departure tax and airport fee foreigners pay is already inside the ticket price.

Rooms: USD 50–120 a night on a local island

Guesthouses are what make a budget trip possible. A clean double with air-conditioning, hot water and breakfast costs USD 50–70 on Maafushi, Gulhi and Hulhumalé, and USD 70–120 on the smaller or further islands (Dhigurah, Ukulhas, Thulusdhoo). Beachfront guesthouses with a pool run USD 120–180. The cheapest beds are a handful of dorm-style rooms on Maafushi and Hulhumalé at USD 25–35 per person. Read our comparison of the best local islands before you pick one; the cheapest island is not always the cheapest trip once you add the transfer.

Two things get added to the room rate. The Green Tax is USD 6 per person per night at guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer (USD 12 at resorts and big hotels), and the government charges 17% TGST plus a 10% service charge that most guesthouses roll into the advertised price. Always check whether a quoted rate is “net” or “plus taxes”: a USD 60 room can become USD 83 for two at checkout.

Food: USD 15–35 a day

Breakfast is almost always included. For the rest, a local “hotaa” café serves mas huni (tuna, coconut and chilli) with roshi flatbread and tea for MVR 30–60 (USD 2–4), and a rice-and-curry lunch for MVR 60–100. Tourist restaurants on Maafushi charge USD 8–15 for a grilled-fish or pasta main, USD 15–25 for a lobster or reef-fish barbecue. A 1.5-litre bottle of water is MVR 10–20 in a shop but USD 3–5 in a restaurant. There is no alcohol on inhabited islands; the only drink is on the “floating bars” moored off Maafushi, where a beer is USD 8–12. Budget USD 15–20 a day eating local, USD 25–35 if you eat in tourist restaurants every night.

Getting there and around: the ferry is the budget trick

The MTCC public ferry from Malé to Maafushi costs MVR 22 (about USD 1.45) and takes 90 minutes; the shared speedboat costs USD 20–30 and takes 40 minutes. The ferry does not run on Fridays and leaves Malé at 15:00, so a morning arrival means a few hours in the city first (the airport–Malé ferry is under USD 2). Full timings are in our airport-to-Maafushi guide. For Ari Atoll islands the speedboat is USD 50–70 each way, which is the main reason Maafushi, Gulhi and Hulhumalé are cheaper than Dhigurah or Ukulhas. On the island you walk everywhere. Seaplanes and resort speedboats (USD 150–700) are what turn a budget trip into a mid-range one; see how Maldives transfers work before booking anywhere remote.

Excursions: what each trip costs

Excursion (from Maafushi)2026 price per personTime
Snorkelling trip (reef + turtles or nurse sharks)USD 25–40Half day
Sandbank trip with lunchUSD 30–50Half day
Dolphin watching at sunsetUSD 20–302 hours
Night fishingUSD 20–353 hours
Resort day pass (boat, lunch, pool, beach)USD 90–200 (alcohol extra)Full day
Fun dive (certified)USD 50–70 incl. gearHalf day
PADI Open Water courseUSD 450–6003–4 days
Snorkel gear rentalUSD 5–10 a day (often free with a trip)—

Prices drop if you book through the guesthouse and fill a boat with four to six people. Excursions are where budget travellers overspend: two trips a day for five days is USD 300–400. Pick one a day and do the free things in between: the bikini beach, the house reef from shore, sunset on the jetty.

A real day on Maafushi: USD 92

A typical day for one person sharing a USD 70 double on Maafushi, where most budget trips start: room share USD 35, Green Tax USD 6, breakfast included. Lunch at a local café USD 4, dinner at a tourist restaurant USD 14, water and snacks USD 3. Half-day snorkelling trip USD 30. That is USD 92; a day without an excursion is USD 62. Over seven nights, adding the ferry, a sandbank trip and one resort day pass, a careful couple spends about USD 1,100–1,400 between them before flights.

The costs people forget

  • Green Tax. USD 6 per person per night at guesthouses, USD 12 at resorts, charged on top of the room unless the listing says it is included.
  • TGST and service charge. 17% tax plus 10% service charge on everything at resorts and on many guesthouse extras. On a resort day pass, USD 100 “plus plus” means USD 128.
  • ATM and card fees. Foreign-card withdrawals cost about MVR 100 (USD 6.50), only Malé, Hulhumalé and a few big islands have ATMs, and some guesthouses add 3–5% for card payments. Bring US dollars in cash.
  • Friday. No public ferries and most shops shut until the afternoon. A Friday arrival means a speedboat, not a USD 1.45 ferry.
  • SIM card. USD 20–35 at the airport; see which SIM to buy.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Booking a far atoll to save USD 20 a night, then paying USD 120 more in speedboats.
  • Arriving on a Friday or after 15:00 and losing the ferry option.
  • Changing lots of money into rufiyaa. Almost everything is priced in USD; you need a little MVR for cafés and ferries, nothing more.
  • Buying a day pass at a resort an hour away. Choose one within 20–30 minutes or the boat eats the day.
  • Assuming “all taxes included” on booking sites. Check the fine print for Green Tax, which is often collected in cash at the guesthouse.

Gulhi, Thulusdhoo and Hulhumalé are the other three islands where a budget trip works without long transfers: Gulhi shares the Maafushi ferry, Thulusdhoo is 30 minutes by speedboat and Hulhumalé is a taxi ride from the airport.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need for 7 days in the Maldives on a budget?

Around USD 550–700 per person for seven nights on a local island, sharing a double, eating a mix of local and tourist food and doing three or four excursions. Add USD 100–200 for a resort day pass, and your international flight.

Is USD 50 a day possible in the Maldives?

Only just, and only in low season: a USD 25–30 dorm bed or shared double on Maafushi or Hulhumalé, Green Tax, local café meals and no paid excursions comes to USD 50–55. Snorkelling from the beach is free, so it is a real option for a few days, not a whole week.

Which is the cheapest island in the Maldives for tourists?

Maafushi and Hulhumalé have the lowest room rates (from USD 50 a double) and the cheapest transfers from the airport. Gulhi is a quieter option on the same ferry at similar prices.

Do I pay Green Tax on a local island?

Yes. Since January 2025 it is USD 6 per person per night at guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer, and USD 12 at resorts and larger hotels. Children under two are exempt. It is usually collected at check-in or checkout, often in cash.

Should I bring US dollars or use cards?

Bring US dollars in cash for guesthouses, excursions and the Green Tax; most places accept them and many prefer them. Use a card only where there is no surcharge, and withdraw a little rufiyaa in Malé for cafés, shops and the ferry.

Prices and tax rates correct as of October 2026 and based on current guesthouse and excursion rates on Maafushi and nearby islands. TopTravelSky is based in Malé — tell us if you spot a change.
